Esp@cenet Version 3 Preview
The European Patent Office ("EPO") is previewing the latest "Version 3" prototype for its Esp@cenet patent information service at http://preview.espacenet.com/home. This prototype is expected to replace the current version of the Esp@cenet service in mid-2003. Until then, the EPO is collecting comments via e-mail at espacenet@epo.org.

According to the preview website, the prototype contains "the majority of" features that will ultimately be made available in the officially released version. However, access through the prototype is currently limited to the Worldwide and Patent Abstracts of Japan databases, and the user interface is currently offered only in English. The prototype is therefore being made available in parallel with the current Esp@cenet service.

Highlights of the improved service include cover-page drawings displayed next to the text of the abstract and storage of up to 20 documents for 30 days in "My Patents List." Although users still can not print complete patent copies directly from their search results, the My Patent List itself can be printed for use with other free services, such as the U.S. Patent Fetcher Service from Patent Logistics, the GetIPDL patent downloader software from Ujihara Kazuya, and other patent downloaders.
