New Correspondence Addresses for USPTO Starting May 1
The United States Patent and Trademark Office ("USPTO" or "Office") announced on March 25, 2003 that it is revising the Rules of Practice to change the address, and titles of receiving officials, for certain correspondence with the Office starting May 1, 2003. In addition, the special "Box" designations are being changed to corresponding "Mail Stop" designations. Although the new addresses and box designations are already in operation, there has been no indication as to whether or when the USPTO's forms will be updated with these changes.

The USPTO's future principal office in Alexandria, Virginia is more conveniently located near a United States Postal Service ("USPS") facility in the same city. The Office is therefore changing its correspondence addresses so that all correspondence, other than trademark-related correspondence, will be routed through that postal facility in Alexandria. The Office will therefore have three general mailing addresses:

(1) For correspondence processed by the organizations reporting to the Commissioner for Patents:
Commissioner for Patents
PO Box 1450
Alexandria, Virginia 2231350
(2) For correspondence processed by the organizations reporting to the Commissioner for Trademarks or the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board:
Commissioner for Trademarks
2900 Crystal Drive
Arlington, Virginia 222021322202-3514 [revised by USPTO on April 21, 2003]
(3) For other correspondence (including patent and trademark documents sent to the Assignment Division for recordation and requests for certified or uncertified copies of patent or trademark documents):
Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office
PO Box 1450
Alexandria, Virginia 22313 1450.
The Office will also have separate mailing addresses for certain other correspondence:

(4) Court-related correspondence (e.g., a summons and complaint) being delivered to the Office via the USPS must be addressed:
General Counsel
United States Patent and Trademark Office
PO Box 15667
Arlington, Virginia 22215
(5) Correspondence directed to the counsel for the Office of Enrollment and Discipline (OED) Director relating to disciplinary proceedings pending before an Administrative Law Judge or the Director must be addressed:
Office of the Solicitor
PO Box 16116
Arlington, Virginia 22215
(6) Payments of maintenance fees in patents being delivered to the Office via the USPS should be addressed:
United States Patent and Trademark Office
PO Box 371611
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 1525011
(7) Deposit account replenishments being delivered to the Office via the USPS should be addressed:
Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office
PO Box 70541
Chicago, Illinois 60673.
In addition, the Office is changing the special "Box" designations to corresponding "Mail Stop" designations (e.g., 憫Box 4拻 will now be 憫Mail Stop 4拻) because the Box designations have been confused with the Post Office Box number. Finally, the former recipient titles 憫Commissioner of Patents and Trademarks,拻 憫Assistant Commissioner for Patents,拻 and 憫Assistant Commissioner for Trademarks拻 have been changed to 憫Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office,拻 憫Commissioner for Patents,拻 and 憫Commissioner for Trademarks,拻 respectively, according to in 13 of the American Inventors Protection Act of 1999.
